JERSEY CITY, N.J., July 20, 2019 – Work is under way to excavate chromium-impacted soil and debris in Carteret Avenue between Garfield and Pacific avenues.

The excavation began in early June after PPG reached an agreement with the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority on a plan for digging up and hauling away impacted material on top of or beside a 96-inch sewer line buried more than 15 feet beneath the street. Impacted material is being transported for disposal at a regulated landfill.

PPG’s cleanup work will have no impact on JCMUA customers.

PPG’s contractor expects to remove 45,000 tons of material when the 1,000-foot long excavation is completed by early next year.
